I am trying to decide on a new compact tractor to buy. I like the versitility of the Steiner and the Ventrac 4000, but I like the controls on the 400 better, and they can ship with a bigger diesel engine.DOes anyone have any experience with the Ventrac? Are there any other manufacturers of simular type out there? I want the low COG as I have some pretty steep slopes to mow.

The first question you must ask yourself is what type of work do you need to do? Is it 100 percent mowing, or will other stuff come up that you will need the tractor for, like back blade or boxblade work, digging post holes, pulling a wagon or manure spreader, etc. etc. I have posted on my fascination for the Steiner before - they are beautiful machines. For me, however, I absolutely needed a 3 point hitch (catagoty 1, not the smaller catagory 0 available on machines like the Steiner and the larger JD garden tractors) and the attendant rear pto. To give up the 3 point is to give up a tremendous amount of versatilty for projects you might not even know today that you will end up needing to do. Let the board know what you want to accomplish, and you will get plenty of advice.

I have owned both, and they are both excellent. I also mow and operate on steep hills. Both tractors equipped with duals front and rear will operate safely on slopes up to 30 degrees. The controls on the 4000 are nice. Websites for these 2 companies are (www.steinerturf.com) and (www.venturepro.com) Similar units are also made by Power-Trac (www.power-trac.com). ....

Thanks Paul and Jack:

As for what I want to do, well, I will be mowing about three acres, and doing a lot of weed and bramble clearing. I also have a stream bed project that I want to clear out, (some of which I will rent a bigger machine for), and misc dirt moving. I was looking at getting the mower deck, and a slip scoop for starters.

Jack: I mowed my grass with a 22hp gas version, and was dissapointed with the power. I don't remember the Steiner bogging down at all when I drove it. Of course, I am looking at the Tecumsha (sp) 25.5 hp deisel with the 4000, so I hope that it will have a lot more low end torque than the gas.

I will check out www.power-trac.com as well to see what they have. Right now, I am willing to look at anything to make sure I get what is best for my property. BTW: I hear that the Ventrac 4000 three point hitch is a cat 1, no PTO right now, they're working on that.

Are there very many companies making implements for Steiner, and the Ventrac?

....

I am not aware of any 3rd party companies making front attachments for Steiner or Ventrac. Many attachments will interchange between the two. Ventrac 3 point is Cat I, but intended for "light duty" Cat I implements such as small box scrapers, utility blades, landscape rakes, etc. You probably would also want the optional hydro foot pedal when using 3 point implements since the 3 point controls are on the right side console along with the hand hydro control. Both tractors offer the same Kubota gasoline engine WG750-E (22-24 hp depending on settings) and the Ventrac now offers the higher power Dihatsu-Vanguard engines (26.5 hp Diesel and 31 hp Gasoline.) I recommend you take test drives on your property (or other similar hills) with duals and mower deck to really get acquainted with performance. ....

I stopped by the Power Trac website. Man, is it slooooow, but the 400/1400 series look to be in the size range. I will call them tomorrow to get the name of a dealer near here. Based on your experience, which would you say is the better tractor, Steiner, or Ventrac? ....

The main reason for not looking at Kuboda, JD and the like is the "tip factor" that comes into play when mowing ona 30% slope and similar situations.

The Steiner and Ventrac both have a low COG, and wide stance that makes them much less prone to tip. I havent seen anyone else that has those same features.

Jim 0 you are 100% right about the tip factor. My Kubota is unstable on a 15 degree slope, much less 30! The only POSSIBLE exception would be the new BX series, which is of similar size to the Steiner 430, yet has a true 3 point hitch, pto, etc. It looks lower to the ground than a regular compact tractor, but I have never seen one in person. Maybe you could see one before you spend the $
